International Award

Breathlessness Management Group wins 2nd Place!

The Willowbrook entry for the International Journal of Palliative Nursing Awards, celebrating the work of the Breathlessness Management Group here at the Hospice, was short-listed for an award earlier this year. Members of the Breathlessness Management Group were invited to attend the prestigious ceremony in London, and were thrilled to receive an award for 2nd place.

Our congratulations go out to the team. This award is testament to the dedication and care shown by all the staff at Willowbrook and the Breathlessness Management Group in particular whose innovative project has helped many of our patients and their carers.

New Shop at Four Acre

Visit our new shop for some retail therapy!

We are delighted to announce the opening of our new shop in Four Acre Lane, Clock Face which has ample car parking available close by.

This is our newest shop where we will be selling lots of good quality clothes, furniture, bric-a-brac and some electrical items. The shop will also be open to receive donations of goods and furniture from the general public in support of the Hospice.

All money raised will help Willowbrook to care for local patients with life-limiting illnesses, and provide support to their carers and families..

We have recruited a number of local volunteers to run the shop, and it is now open 6 days a week, helping to serve the local community.

We look forward to welcoming you to the shop and hope that you will enjoy the shopping experience whilst supporting the Hospice in providing much-needed care for local people.

Award Winning Gardens

RHS Silver Award in Regional Garden Competition

Willowbrook has formed good relationships with the Japanese Garden Society and RHS Wisley. The Japanese Garden Society has built two beautiful gardens in the grounds which are tranquil and calming areas for use by patients, carers, staff and volunteers. Students from RHS Wisley designed a “Willow Brook” garden at the entrance which provides a welcoming and stunning view for those visiting the Hospice.

There is still much work to do on the gardens, but following an inspection by North West in Bloom, the Hospice won a Silver Medal Award in the Best Hospital Grounds category.

We must extend our thanks to the Japanese Garden Society and RHS Wisley for all their hard work and, of course, to our staff and volunteer gardeners who keep the grounds looking so beautiful for the enjoyment of everyone.

New Website

Hopefully, you will find our new Website much more user-friendly and informative.

This only went “live” at the beginning of September but we will be up-dating it on a regular basis to provide up to date information on our services and events.

Cultivate Creative, a local St Helens design company, is to be congratulated on providing their expertise and experience in building the website for us. Cheers Cultivate – thank you for all your help!

New Car Park

If you have tried to drive down Portico Lane recently you will have noticed the road has been closed at the railway bridge!! This is because the bridge is being re-built in readiness for electrification of the line. Network Rail, which is undertaking this major engineering project, has been renting Willowbrook’s land to store their equipment which has provided a boost to funds for the Hospice.

Like many other companies, Network Rail has a Corporate Social Responsibility Programme and they, in conjunction with Murphy Construction, have generously offered to build additional car parking spaces on our land before they leave site.

The services of the Hospice are in great demand, so the additional spaces will be of great benefit to our patients and visitors. We are extremely grateful to Network Rail and Murphy Construction for their magnificent contribution to the work of the Hospice.

Official Opening – Japanese Garden

Over the last couple of years, The North West Japanese Garden Society has very kindly given up some of their weekends to build two Japanese Gardens within the Hospice. These are beautiful, serene areas of contemplation and peace for the use of everyone within the Hospice.

A first visit to the Hospice can be a daunting experience – but we hope that by providing beautiful gardens and surroundings that first step across the threshold can be less of an ordeal. Although we can’t make people better, we can make them feel better and our gardens do just that! There is a myth that a Hospice is where you go to die – but we try to dispel that myth and believe that Willowbrook is a place to live. In fact, we actually discharge over 50% of our Inpatients back to their homes!

Through the North West Japanese Garden Society, we have been able to arrange a visit to the Hospice by the First Secretary to the Japanese Ambassador, Kita-san. He has kindly agreed to officially open the gardens on Thursday, 28th June.

15th Year Anniversary Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving

This year, Willowbrook Hospice is celebrating 15 years of providing Specialist Palliative Care to more than 5,000 patients and support to their carers, families and friends and we have arranged a service to recognize this important milestone.

Lady Kirsty Pilkington extends an invitation to everyone within the community to our 15th Anniversary Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving which is being held at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday, 14th July 2012 at the Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool. We are currently trying to contact families of patients we have cared for and former employees to invite them to the Service, although we understand people may have moved house since our contact with them. You do not need a special invitation – just come along and bring your family and friends. Please be seated in the Cathedral by 1.30 – 1.45 p.m.

Broadcaster, Martyn Lewis has very kindly offered to give the address and Kathryn Rudge, mezzo soprano, the band of the Irish Guards and pupils from De la Salle School will provide accompanying music. This should be a moving and special occasion for everyone involved.

We look forward to seeing you then!
