Roger Johnson Joins Willowbrook!

BBC North West Tonight news presenter Roger Johnson is now a Patron of Willowbrook Hospice.

Roger, who also presents BBC Breakfast on Sunday has been nominated for, and won, several Royal Television Society Awards and we know he will continue to be a success in his new role.

Before moving up north to take up his role at North West Tonight, Roger supported Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Winchester whilst working for BBC South, so he is well aware of how important hospice care is to a local community. We are delighted that Roger has agreed to help us to raise the profile of the good work that we do here at Willowbrook Hospice.

Welcome Roger and we look forward to working with you!

Hospice Receives Capital Grant from the Department of Health

Willowbrook has been awarded a grant of £663,000 from the Department of Health specifically to improve and extend the Inpatient facilities at the Hospice. We received the biggest share of the money available because St Helens and Knowsley are two areas of the greatest need – poorer areas where some people are not in great health and the chances of dying from cancer are higher than in other areas around the country.

However, Neil Wright, Chief Executive, stressed that although we have received this very welcome grant, it can only be used for building work. We still need the support of the local community, and donations and fundraising remain vital to maintain our day to day services for patients, carers and families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Hospice receives 1000 referrals a year and consistently runs at 95% occupancy, so consequently there is always a waiting list. The additional single rooms being built from the grant, will provide more dignified and private care for people who are terminally ill or in need of specialist care.

It still costs £6,000 per day to run our services – so every single penny raised and donated by the local community helps someone to be cared for at Willowbrook.

635 Years of Great Volunteering

Each year we have a special evening to thank our volunteers for their loyalty.

The evening last November was particularly special as we presented long service awards to volunteers who helped to raise money to build the Hospice and lay the foundation for the success of the Hospice over the last 15 years. Dame Lorna Muirhead, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside and Patron of Willowbrook Hospice, presented 20 years’ service awards, as well as awards for 5, 10 and 15 years’ service. It is truly amazing that we have volunteers who have been with us for 20 years, who built the Hospice with their fundraising and who have seen it grow to the great place that it is today. Thank you to every volunteer who offers their time for caring.
