Alex Stringer – Through The Lens

Some visitors to our hospice might have noticed the artwork that we have on display around the building. These glorious images have been captured not by an award-winning photographer, but our very own, Alex Stringer.

Alex is a Health Care Assistant on the Inpatient Unit and has had a passion for photography for a number of years.

In 2020, during the Covid Pandemic, Alex decided to purchase a professional camera to take photography up as a hobby.

Shifts at the hospice during the pandemic were very difficult, so when Alex wasn’t working, he enjoyed taking time out to capture nature at its very best.

When our Outreach Service launched an in-house photography competition for staff and volunteers to take part in, Alex didn’t hesitate to submit a photo, which ended up being the winning entry!

Our Hospice recently underwent a major refurbishment, and to complete the overall look, some of Alex’s images were chosen to be showcased throughout the building. All images were taken across St Helens and Knowsley to highlight the history and connection between the localities.

One particular image of Lowe House Church caught the eye of a patient who had a strong connection to the church.

Having grown up in the area, they chose Lowe House Church to get married and sadly later had their funeral there.

When the patient realised Alex had commissioned the image, they said: “your photo has brought me peace.”

These lovely words have brought a new significance to this one photo that means even more to Alex than before.

Alex started working at Willowbrook Hospice after his dad was a patient here.

At the time, Alex was working in a care home when his dad encouraged him to try for a position one day, stating the care he received here was “exceptional”. Alex has since been a highly regarded member of the team for over 9 years.

Thank you Alex for capturing these meaningful images. They are truly stunning.

If you happen to be visiting our hospice, please take a few minutes to enjoy them!
