Running for Grandad who lit up Freckleton Road

Steph Barrett successfully competed in the 10k Great Manchester Run with her mum Julie on Sunday 21st May 2023.

Steph chose to fundraise for Willowbrook Hospice in memory of her Grandad John who passed away two years ago.

She wanted to carry on his legacy of raising funds for the hospice which he used to do by decorating his house with Christmas lights on Freckleton Road every year.

Together with her mum, they completed the run in one hour 16 minutes in extreme heat and have raised over £660 in sponsorship!

Steph said, “When we decided to enter this run for my Grandad, we were at the time, by no means, runners! We set ourselves this challenge to help raise funds for Willowbrook Hospice, just as my Grandad did. Anyone who knows me, knows that running does not come naturally to me.

We started training with couch to 5k, and in February we ran our first 5k together which gave us confidence for our 10k run!

On the day the run was even more challenging than we thought as we were running in 21 degree heat! The atmosphere in Manchester was incredible and having friends and family there cheering us on throughout really helped. We were overwhelmed with the kindness of the donations and knowing how much we had raised in memory of Grandad got us through to the finish line, feeling very proud at the end.”
