Staff Working over Christmas shares their stories

Staff Nurse Andrew shares with us, what it is like working at the hospice over the Christmas season:

“This Christmas Day I’ll be working the late shift at Willowbrook Hospice. Having worked here for over 7 years, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible difference we’re able to make to our patients and their loved ones, often at the times they need it most.

Christmas can be a busy and overwhelming time, and it’s easy to lose sight of what it truly means. Working at Willowbrook is a constant reminder that it’s not about the presents or the rush, but about spending meaningful, quality time with the people we love.

While it can be difficult being away from our own families on days like Christmas, knowing that we’re helping ensure our patients can experience a special day, surrounded by comfort, compassion and specialist support, makes it all worthwhile.

It is a true privilege to be part of a team that puts care, dignity and kindness at the heart of everything we do – especially on a day that means so much to so many.”

Staff nurse Carly shares her experience…

“It’s not how you may think. Of course, there will be sadness, but you also see patients and families smile, laugh and be happy, knowing they are surrounded by their special people.

You may get to see them opening gifts, enjoy a Christmas pud (and maybe a cheeky Baileys!), or they will tell you all about it afterwards. It’s a real privilege to witness the love and comfort the day can bring.

When my shift ends, I go home to my own family knowing that, as a team, we’ve helped to make people feel as well as they can to enjoy this special time with the people they love most.

For some, this may not be possible, and for those people we offer comfort, support and love to try and make their day that bit more bearable.”

We want to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing hospice team for everything that you do, to ensure that Willowbrook Hospice care is here for our community 365 days of the year.

Your compassion, dedication and care make such a difference to our patients and their families, not just at Christmas, but every single day. We are so grateful for everything you do.
