2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June). Willowbrook Hospice joined thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK. With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we hoped to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.
The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole has never been more important.
We shared a number of stories from our volunteers who devote their time to Willowbrook Hospice, to hear why they do what they do.
Ian Turnbull, Volunteer Engagement Manager for Willowbrook Hospice said:
“I just want to highlight the brilliant and unstinting support all our volunteers give to Willowbrook – with over 490 of you volunteering each and every week across the actual hospice, all our shops, The Living Well and Fundraising and during the past 12 months you have all donated a total of 70,868 hours of support which equates to over £780,000- a massive and very powerful contribution.
As a very famous person once said – “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.”
Huge thanks for all your support from both Nicola and me.”
