Congratulations to Alex Glover and Helen Hobin, two Willowbrook Hospice supporters who recently took part in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon and between them has raised £4,233 which is a really fantastic amount for our hospice!
Alex ran in memory of his Mum, Angela, who received care from our hospice following her eight year battle with cancer.
Alex said: “On 20th September 2023, my life changed entirely when my Mum left home to visit Willowbrook, so she could be supported for her pain and to also give my dad more support who had been caring for her. My Mum’s stay was only meant to be for two weeks, but regretfully my Mum didn’t return home.
During her stay in the hospice, my Mum very sadly suffered a stroke and then subsequently a bleed on her brain which led to her sadly passing away on the 13th of October 2023 with myself and close family present with her. My Mum was cared for by all the amazing staff at Willowbrook who provided endless specialist palliative care allowing her to live with dignity and care right until the end of her life.
All the staff were very compassionate to myself and my family helping us to come to terms with my Mum’s terminal illness. Willowbrook became a haven for myself, in which I felt very supported and surrounded by people who understood the effects of my Mum’s end of life condition.
None of us will know when we might require the comfort and support from somewhere like Willowbrook, so that is why I chose to raise funds so that the hospice can continue to provide care to people like my Mum, for many more years to come.”
Helen said: “Willowbrook Hospice is such a special place. We will all know someone who has been cared for by the amazing and caring team at Willowbrook. We also never know when we may need that care personally ourselves one day, so that is why I chose to raise funds by running the Dublin Marathon.
With it costing £5 million per year to run the hospice and very little funding from the government, I felt I needed to do something, every little does help!”
We are so grateful to our amazing supporters who take on challenges like a marathon to raise money for Willowbrook, we couldn’t do what we do without our community who fundraise for us.
