Hospice Care Week – Volunteers

As this year’s theme for Hospice Care Week focuses on the importance of our charity shops, we wanted to share some testimonials from the volunteers who support our Willowbrook Hospice shops.

New research from Hospice UK has revealed that last year, “more money was spent in hospice charity shops than hospices received from government, as the sector struggles with the mounting financial pressures of providing vital end-of-life-care.”

Meet Ann and Christine who volunteer at our Living Well shop. Ann has devoted 11 years and Christine, 5 years to Willowbrook.

Both said that they got more out of volunteering than they ever thought they would and say it is really rewarding.

They have got to know customers, and enjoy the connection they have with them. Often customers are bringing in donations as they have accessed our services and will feel safe and comfortable to tell their story at the same time, knowing that some of our volunteers have been there themselves.

“People don’t realise what a hospice is for, unless they have needed it. It is great to see so many that support what we do because they want to give back, but it is also important to support us if they have never needed us, because you never know when you or someone you know, might need to.”

It is so important that we celebrate the wonderful work our staff and volunteers in our shops do for Willowbrook. Their work allows us to continue providing our various services to our patients with life limiting illnesses, and their families.
