Volunteer Spotlight – Joy

Joy has been volunteering for Willowbrook for over 10 years in lots of roles including driving, helping at fundraising events, working in shops and supporting our Chatty Cafes.

We caught up with Joy in the Outreach Service at Willowbrook where Joy volunteers each week at a “Wellness For You” session.

These weekly groups are a warm, supportive space for people living with a life-limiting illness. They offer a mix of symptom support, relaxation, wellbeing activities and the chance to chat and share experiences with others who understand.

Joy’s volunteer role includes giving hand massages in the therapy room, serving afternoon tea and chatting to patients. Joy told us why she is so passionate about her role:

“This is a marvellous place with such a strong sense of community, the care the patients receive is phenomenal. I feel incredibly privileged and find it very rewarding to be part of it, especially seeing the stress melt away when I give a massage and witnessing how beneficial it is to the patients. Having had several friends cared for by Willowbrook, it also means a lot to me personally. Volunteering here has opened my eyes to the bigger picture and I see each week what everyone’s fundraising and volunteering efforts actually support. I see first-hand the real impact volunteering has and I tell everyone I meet to do it!”
