Spotlight on Compassionate Neighbour Mel

The Volunteer Hub would like to shine a spotlight on our Compassionate Neighbour Volunteers.

Each week our fabulous team of volunteers go out to visit people in the community who may be feeling isolated or going through a difficult time – offering a chat, a bit of help with shopping, a visit to a coffee shop or simply some company over a cup of tea.

Mel has been volunteering as a Compassionate Neighbour for five years. He visits Marjorie each week to support her with her shopping and to spend quality time together, forming an important and valued part of her weekly routine.

They are a familiar sight at Morrisons, where Marjorie enjoys chatting with the staff and other regular shoppers. As a carer for her husband, Dudley, she really values this time – getting out, having a chat, and seeing friendly, familiar faces.

Mel says: “Straight away I could see the difference my visits make. We have a good chat and a laugh each week, and we’ve built a real trust. I enjoy listening and talking, so it suits me well. The training and support from the Volunteer Hub have been excellent – there’s always someone to call if I need advice.”

💬We’re looking for more people to join our Compassionate Neighbour team. If you’re a good listener and enjoy a chat, this could be a great fit. You don’t need special skills – just kindness and a bit of time.
