Volunteers’ Week – Alison’s Story

Let’s shine the spotlight on Alison! Alison has volunteered for Willowbrook Hospice since October 2020. Let’s find out some more about her!

“I work on reception at The Living Well, I deal with visitors, receive donations and handle telephone calls.

I decided to volunteer after retiring from a long teaching career, as I wanted to give back to the community. I know quite a lot of people who have accessed the hospice services and have nothing but praise for them. This was the main reason for choosing Willowbrook.

People who often come through the reception doors, want to share some of their grieving journey. It might sound strange, but I find it very rewarding meeting people who are often going through the worst time of their life, but I am helping them during their grieving process because they want to talk to someone and make a donation in memory of loved ones.

Volunteering gives me a sense of achievement, helping those who are bereaved in a small way.

A nice story I wanted to share is when a Mum and Daughter came in very distressed, to donate money from a funeral. After a brief conversation, it transpires that we live near to one another and attended the same school many years ago. The personal interaction we had meant they left smiling and thanking me for listening. It didn’t cost me anything so why wouldn’t I!

I would 150% recommend volunteering, whilst you are helping and supporting others, you will meet and work with the very best of people who are very grateful for the support.”

Thank you Alison for your warmth and kindness that you bring to Willowbrook Hospice!. 🩵💚
