Volunteers’ Week – Graham’s Story

Meet Graham, our hospice driver! Read on to find out more about his role:

“I am a volunteer driver at Willowbrook Hospice. My role is quite varied, I pick up outpatients and bring them to the Cedarwood Centre, I take nurses to Whiston Hospital and back, sometimes I go to Broadgreen Hospital to pickup from the pharmacy.

When I pick up someone for the first time from their home, they are so nervous and anxious. I get to know them and hear their life story, and by the time we get to the Cedarwood, they are comfortable with me and feel relaxed. I enjoy chatting to them and it is so rewarding when they say “That was a wonderful drive”.

I started volunteering after I retired, and enjoyed being a ward companion at the local hospital so thought I would like to do more.

Volunteering is such a humbling experience, a real blessing to be able to do this. I have made some good friends here. It isn’t just volunteering, it is like a family!

I always recommend volunteering to everyone as often as I can, please don’t just sit and think about it, do it and be part of the family!”

Thank you so much Graham for all that you do for Willowbrook Hospice! 🩵💚
